A Rare Sighting.

Tonight, Francis came down to our bedroom half asleep and snuggled up with Matt. I couldn’t bear the idea of taking her back upstairs – it is SO rare that she comes to our bedroom – like, maybe once every 3 years. So, I grabbed my camera to capture the sweetness and then went upstairs and slept in the guest room.

The long walk home.

Today, instead of picking up the big kids from school in the car, Sam and I walked. George found sticks (for his stick collection) and dragged them the mile home while Francis finally got to take advantage of the wheels on her backpack. A few blocks into our walk, a friend stopped and talked to me from her car. The kids grew restless and when she pulled away, they began to discuss how I shouldn’t talk to people on our walk because it takes too long.

George: Mom, you know what you should do when you see people who want to talk to you on the way home?

Me: What George?

George: You should duck and hide and when they get close and don’t see you, they’ll think you were a mirage.

Me: Smart George. Very smart. I’ll try it next time.

My Builder

Tonight the Science and History museum came to our school and George quickly gravitated towards the cups.

My sweet Valentines.

On Valentines day, we had a “fancy dinner” picnic in our entry way (It was a bit too cold outside) and continued with our annual tradition of opening our family Valentine box.

We’ve all been busy making Valentines for the past two weeks. Tonight we had a great time opening these and reading them out loud.

Sorry for the large quantity of photos, but I don’t want to forget any of these… and really, there are so many more cute ones. I love my people.

You’ll note a lack of photos of Sam during this dinner. Truth be told, Sam and Matt were absent for a large part of our picnic. Matt tells me it was the worst poopy diaper change – ever. Admittedly, it did involve Matt giving Sam a bath. Thank you for sparing me the task, sweet husband… Happy Valentines to me.

Sacrifice

For many years now, my principal source of hydration has been cola products. A couple of years ago, I switched to diet coke and diet dr. pepper. If anything, the switch increased my cola intake.

I’ve always known it was bad for me, but consequences seemed so remote.

Last Tuesday, suddenly, the consequences didn’t seem so remote. Nothing specific, although I did read a headline linking diet soda with vascular disease. Mainly, I’m just feeling older, and feeling compelled to live a long time. Or at least try.

What if I stopped drinking cokes? Not just for lent, as I have for the last few years, but forever. I think that would be good. I’m going to do it and reevaluate my addiction in one year. Somebody remind me.

Supporting my sacrifice, Sally gave me the sweetest valentine’s gift tonight: a mix-and-match sixer from Central Market’s beer fridge. Are there any studies on the effects of daily beer versus daily diet soda?
